Detailed Itinerary

La Paz Aereal View, Bolivia - Atelier South America

Day 1 | La Paz

Upon arrival, you will be met by an Atelier representative who’ll help you through the airport and give you a snapshot of life in La Paz during your journey to the hotel. Along the way, enjoy the dramatic mountainscape that surrounds this characterful city before hotel check-in, and an evening at leisure.

2 Sun Island - Bolivia - Atelier South America

Day 2 | La Paz/Titicaca Lake/Sun Island

Your journey really gets going with a full-day exploration of Lake Titicaca, a place that’s been sacred for Peruvians and Bolivians alike over many centuries. Some say the floating islands of the lake even kept native peoples safe from invading Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century. It’s a beautiful location too, the highest navigable lake in the world surrounded by hills and dotted with islands. Start the day by travelling to Huatajata on the shores of Lake Titicaca and visit the interesting local museum there, before boarding a luxury hydrofoil boat to explore the waters of the lake itself. You’ll visit the historical Sun and Moon Islands, exploring the Sun Virgins Temple “Iñak Uyu” Sacred Fountain, among other important sites, finishing at the lakeshore town of Copacabana.

Domos Location, Kachi Lodge, Uyuni - Atelier South America

Day 3 | La Paz/Uyuni

From mythical Lake Titicaca and the bustling streets of La Paz to one of the most extraordinary landscapes in South America, if not the world. Day 3 takes you to Uyuni, famous for its salt flats but home to so much more besides. You’ll take a domestic flight from La Paz and be met by a local guide who’ll assist you to the magnificent Kachi Lodge, an incredible set of domes in the heart of the salt flats for some of the best views and starry skies in the Southern Hemisphere. The rest of the day can be spent at leisure or enjoying one of the many tours available here: ancient mummies; Tunupa Volcano; hiking and biking; local farm tours; sunset adventures; star gazing; and so much more. Note: Between May and August there can be snowfall which restricts access to the Green and Red lagoons, geysers, hot springs and Dalí Desert. Between December and April the salt flats are still accessible but can be flooded, with access to Incahuasi Island, Pucara de Ayque’s Mummies and Puerto Chuvica being restricted. Transfer times are subject to variation according to trails and weather conditions.

Day 4 | Uyuni

Among the most iconic travel experiences in South America – and certainly the most photo-worthy – today it’s time to explore the ethereal Uyuni Salt Flats. This 10,0000 sqm expanse of perfectly flat, mirror-like salt plains – itself the remnants of a dried-up prehistoric lake – must be seen to be believed. The skewed sense of perspective the Uyuni Salt Flats are known is a lot of fun, though stunningly beautiful too. And there’s more. Having been wowed by the plains, further stops include the giant cacti of Incahuasi Island in the middle of the desert, the ancient ruins (and mummies) of Pukara de Ayke, Thunupa Volcano, and even a luxury hotel made only from salt. It’s a day like no other.

Pulacayo Train Cementery - Bolivia - Atelier South America

Day 5 | Uyuni/La Paz

Having spent the night under the starry skies of Uyuni, you may have chance to visit the so-called Train Cemetery, and one last natural spectacle at Ojos de Agua before your journey back to La Paz. Upon arrival in La Paz, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure or take in some of the top spots you may have missed on your first visit here like the Juan de Vargas Museum, Murillo House, and the Museum of Gold. There’s chance to see the city from above at the Killi Killi Lookout, or on a cable car ride, and take a short drive to the Moon Valley for impossibly ornate rock formations that were once a formidable mountain.

Day 6 | La Paz/Cusco

From Bolivia to Peru, and the unmistakable Sacred Valley of the Inca. Day 3 of your tour takes you to some of the most iconic ancient wonders and mythical landscapes in South America. You’ll fly to Cusco from La Paz, where a driver will be waiting to take you to your boutique hotel in the Sacred Valley for check-in. The rest of the day should be spent at leisure acclimatizing too the altitude.

ATV 3 Piuray - Sacred Valley - Atelier South America

Day 7 | Sacred Valley

Today it’s time to delve deeper into the Sacred Valley and be transported to the age of the Inca, as you discover the superbly preserved archaeological sites of Pisac, Moray, and Ollantaytambo. These magnificent ancient wonders – with their terraces, solid walls and water channels – are worth the trip to Peru alone, so be sure to soak up their majesty at your own pace. Lunch comes courtesy of a local hacienda, known for its freshly farmed produce and sweeping Sacred Valley views while you dine. The perfect setting. You can also enjoy a thrilling ATV experience while here.

Machu Picchu Mistery of the Incas - Atelier South America

Day 8 | Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu

Often voted the World’s Top Travel Destination, your next stop is Machu Picchu, a place that has captured the imagination of countless visitors over the years. Once here, it’s easy to see why. To get there, board the 5-star Hiram Bingham train through the Sacred Valley for first-class service and food on one of the most scenic rail journeys in South America. You’ll then get to enjoy The Lost City and all its magic on a private guided tour. Later, find your own quiet corner of the Citadel with free time to explore on your own, taking in those Sacred Valley views all the while, before returning to Cusco by rail on another breathtaking train journey. Upon arrival in Cusco, you’ll be taken to your boutique hotel for check in.

Cooking, Rooftop Kitchen, Cusco - Atelier South America

Day 9 | Cusco

The ancient sites and highlights around Cusco are endless, and you’ll witness a mix of both iconic ruins and hidden gems during your time here. Fully rested after a relaxing evening in this unmatched city, begin today with a tour of Downtown Cusco, the markets, famous Cathedral and hidden alleyways before a trip to the sensational archeological sites of Qorikancha Temple (the most important of its kind in the Inca Empire) and the imposing Sacsayhuaman Fortress. Peru is known as one of the foodie centers of the world, and there’s no better way to find out than with a rooftop cookery masterclass overlooking Cusco, before an afternoon at leisure.
